Lucille King
Swift
Nov 23, 1929 — Jul 28, 2024
Atmore
Lucille King Swift died peacefully on the morning of July 28, 2024, at The Summit, Atmore, AL. She was born on November 23, 1929 to George Lee Davis and Kitty Morris Davis in Monroe County, AL. Lucy, as she was known to most, graduated from J.U. Blackshear High School in Uriah, AL. Lucy married Bush King in 1946 and they were married until his death in 2000. In a time when it was rare for women to work outside the home, Lucy began working for First National Bank in Atmore in 1957 and worked there until her retirement in 2007. Lucy was known and beloved in her community where she was involved in many civic organizations. She was a longtime and faithful member of First Baptist Church of Atmore.
Lucy was a true Southern lady with a strong and independent spirit. She was always elegant, dressed beautifully and moved with grace. She had a delightful sense of humor and an infectious laugh. She enjoyed planning, organizing and hosting her annual Red Hat Party. Always embracing a love of life, she arrived at the church for a WMU meeting on the back of a motorcycle one week before her 87th birthday.
Lucy loved cats and always had one or more, even when she was at The Summit. When she could no longer care for that cat, Sweetie II, her step-niece Amy, adopted her and she continues to live a good life. Lucy treated the cats like they were her children. Though she never had children, Lucy was a second mother to her five younger siblings, her nieces and nephews and many of her friends' children. In her forties she bought a trampoline for "her children" to enjoy when they visited her. She would join them, jumping, laughing and making lifelong memories. On January 12, 2003, Lucy married Robin Swift. He passed away on January 24, 2004. He was married to his first spouse for over 50 years.
Lucy was predeceased by her husbands, her parents and her brothers, Chester and Levern Davis. She is survived by her brother, Alfred Davis (Cheryl), her sisters, Wanda Clark, Glenda Dixon and JoAnn Adams and her sister-in-law, Blanche Davis.
Lucy was a devoted and faithful Christian. She loved people, her church, her family and her career and always had a servant's heart. She was loving, quick-witted and grateful for the life she lived. She will be greatly missed by all those who loved her.
The family is grateful to Jennifer Carnley and Southern Care Hospice, the staff of The Summit and her caregiver, Sandy Capps for their care of our beloved Lucy. We would like to thank her devoted good friend, Charlotte Boyle for the gift of her time each Sunday sharing a Sunday School lesson at The Summit.
Active pallbearers will be Allen Stoner, Monty Clark, Ben Glen, Colt Glen, Jody Calhoun, Les Davis, John Trawick and Alfred Davis.
The family will receive visitors on Saturday, August 3, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. until service time at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Atmore with Rev. Kelly Brown and Dr. Kevin Garrett officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
