Obituary

Louverne Sanders Starkie was welcomed into the hands of her Lord and Savior on October 17, 2026, at Century Care Center.

She was a lifelong resident of Bratt, FL, until 2006, when she moved to Pensacola, FL; then in 2018 she spent the remainder of her life at Century Care Center.

Louverne was born January 31, 1943, in Canoe, AL, to A.D. and Maggie (Norris) Sanders. She was raised in Bratt, FL, and lived there for most of her life. She graduated from Ernest Ward High School in 1961. In the early 90s, she earned an Associate of Science from Jefferson Davis Junior College with her younger daughter, Connie, and later a Bachelor's in Social Work from West Florida University.

Louverne started working at Vanity Fair as a seamstress in the late 60s; in the 1970's she served in the United States National Guard Army all while raising 2 daughters as a single parent. She retired from Vanity Fair when it closed. Her next career was as a social worker. It was her calling; she loved it and was very good at it. Her patients and staff loved and adored her. In 2018, when it was apparent her memory was getting to where it was making it difficult to work, she reluctantly retired and became a resident. She was still a "little spitfire" until just a few months ago. Everyone who worked with her would never deny her work ethic, positivity, ability to go above and beyond, a hard worker, and just a beautiful woman inside and out. She will be missed.

Her faith was important to her. She always had words of encouragement for those she was around. Although life wasn't always kind or easy for her, she never complained. She kept moving forward, always believing God would get her through and take care of everything.

Louverne was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Marvin Sanders, and his wife, Rita (Berry); her sister, Mary Ethel (Sanders) Finch; her nephew, Tony Ray Smith; and her niece, Nelline Sanders.

She is survived by 2 daughters, Cathy Denise (Jimmy) Hadley and Connie Dianne (Rocky) Crews; 4 grandchildren, Tiffany Denise Kelley, Dale Jesse Hunter, Joshawa (Sara) Bell, Justin (Lauren) Bell; one niece, Wanda Faye Smith; one nephew, Eric Sanders; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at 12:00 noon at Oak Hill Cemetery in Atmore, AL, with Bro. Don Sanks officiating. Interment will immediately follow.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Joshawa Bell, Justin Bell, Rhett Bell, Rocky Crews, Jimmy Hadley, and Dale Hunter

Johnson-Quimby Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
