In Loving Memory of Charlene Joan Rounsaville

January 11, 1938 – March 23, 2026

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Charlene Joan Rounsaville, 88, a cherished former schoolteacher, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and beloved community member. Joan left us on March 23, 2026, leaving a legacy of love, dedication, and kindness that will forever be remembered.

Born in Atmore, Alabama, and a 1957 graduate of Escambia County High School. Joan developed an early passion for education and the joy of learning. She pursued her dream, graduating with a bachelor's degree in English education from Howard College (now Samford University), followed by a master's degree from the University of New Mexico.

Joan first married Lee Douglas Coker Sr., a brave and honorable military serviceman. Their union was a beautiful blend of love and mutual respect. They had two children, Lee Douglas Coker, Jr in 1961, and Charles Franklin Coker in 1964. Together, they faced the challenges of military life with unwavering strength and grace. After 18 years of happiness and cherished memories, Doug sadly passed away, leaving a void in Joan's heart.

She went on to teach at Escambia County Middle School. Her classroom was a haven of knowledge and creativity, where countless students found inspiration and guidance under her nurturing care.

In time, Joan found love again with Donnell Rounsaville, a fellow teacher who shared her passion for education and dedication to shaping young minds. Their marriage was a testament to the healing power of love and the importance of companionship. Together, they continued to contribute to the community, supporting each other's dreams and fostering a home filled with warmth and understanding.

Joan is preceded in death by her parents, Charles James White and Thelma Opal Tullis White; first husband, Lee Douglas Coker, Sr, second husband, Donnell Rounsaville; her son Lee Douglas Coker Jr.; and her siblings, Maurice Earl White, James Riley "Pete" (Gerry) White, and Thelma Jean (Aubrey) Till.

She is survived by her son, Charles (Mishalene) Coker; daughter-in-law, Felicia Brantley Coker; stepchildren, Steve (Darlene) Rounsaville, Clay (Holly) Rounsaville, Robert Rounsaville, and Kathy (Orbi) Gonzalez; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her absence leaves an irreplaceable void, but her spirit lives on in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her dedication to education, her love for her family, and her unwavering kindness will continue to inspire all who were touched by her presence.

Graveside service will be held at 10:00 am Friday, March 27, 2026, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Atmore, AL to celebrate Joan's life and legacy with Rev. Arnold Hendrix officiating.  Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.
